The best time to visit the gardens is during spring or early summer when everything's in full bloom and the weather's not too hot. After exploring, you can also head over to nearby spots like the Lake Merritt Boating Center for a quick boat ride, or stop by Grand Avenue for some coffee or ice cream. Tips for the Best Experience of Lake Merritt Garden


  • The different themed zones of the Gardens are Bonsai, Sensory, Mediterranean, Rhododendron, Japanese, Succulent, and edible gardens. 
  • The Bonsai Garden is open Tuesday-Friday 11 am-2:30 pm, Saturday 10 am-3:30 pm, Sunday noon-3:30 pm.
  • Charge ports-a-potties and porta-restrooms nearby are functional but it is best to use facilities in Lakeside Park's pavilion. 
  • Parking in Lakeside Park on weekdays is $2 for 2 hrs or $10 all-day, with weekends and holidays $5 all-day. Street parking is ample though meter rules apply Monday to Saturday 8 am-8 pm, Sunday noon-8 pm. You can pay via Parkmobile or kiosks costing $3/hr typical. 
  • The Gardens are stroller-friendly, pet-free but note that there are no cafes onsite.
  • You can also ask gardening questions to Certified volunteers available on site Monday 9:30-11:30 am, Wednesday and Friday 11 am-1 pm. 
  • Additionally, you can find fliers in 'Help Yourself!' container and self-guided tour maps are available onsite.



How to Reach Lake Merritt Garden


By metro

The nearest stop to the location is Lake Merritt Station which is a 10-15-minute walk via Madison or Bellevue to the gardens.


By train

The closest stop via Amtrak is Jack London Square Station. From there, catch the AC Transit bus NL or 12 to Grand and Bellevue which is just a 5 minute ride to the location.


By bus

For commuting via bus, AC Transit lines 12 or NL to Grand Ave & Perkins are the best options as they are just a short stroll to the garden entrance.


By car

If visiting by car, drive into Lakeside Park via Bellevue Ave off Grand Ave to reach the location.
